How Many Driving Lessons Before Your Test?

It's one of the most common questions I get asked: "how many lessons will I actually need?" The honest answer is that there's no single number that applies to everyone — but there are some useful averages to plan around.

The DVSA average

According to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency's own research, the average learner needs around 45 hours of professional lessons plus roughly 22 hours of private practice with a friend or family member — about 67 hours of driving experience in total before they're truly test-ready (GOV.UK / DVSA "Ready to Pass?"BBC Bitesize). That's an average across all ages and starting points, not a target or a minimum — some learners need considerably fewer hours, others need more, and that's completely normal.

What shortens or lengthens the number

A few factors tend to make the biggest difference:

  • Lesson frequency. Learners who have one or two lessons a week consistently tend to progress faster than those with long gaps between sessions, simply because skills stay fresh.
  • Private practice. Extra practice outside of lessons, supervised by a family member or friend, genuinely speeds things up when it's done well.
  • Prior experience. Anyone who's driven off-road, ridden a motorbike, or had informal practice already tends to need fewer hours to reach test standard.
  • Confidence and anxiety levels. Nervous learners often benefit from more, shorter, lower-pressure sessions rather than fewer long ones.

How tailored, SEN-aware teaching fits in

This is where my approach can make a real difference. I specialise in teaching learners with SEN, neurodivergence (including PDA, ADHD, autism, dyslexia and dyspraxia) and physical disabilities, and I adapt my pace and teaching style to how you actually learn best — not a one-size-fits-all script. For many learners, that tailored approach means fewer wasted lessons repeating things that didn't click the first way round, even if the total hours needed are similar to or above the national average.
